Mauro Formica scored his first Serie A goal as Palermo tied Chievo Verona, 1-1, Saturday.
Palermo earned its second successive draw under coach Alberto Malesani, who replaced Gian Piero Gasperini Feb. 5. Palermo (19 points) escaped the Serie A cellar in controlling the tempo for most of the contest against Chievo (29 points).
Cyril Thereau scored his fifth goal of the season on a 55th-minute penalty kick to tie the score.
Palermo brought in Mauro Boselli (Wigan), Diego Fabbrini (Udinese), Nelson (Real Betis), plus Formica (Blackburn Rovers) in an attempt to salvage the season. All four played an important role against Chievo.
