Valter Birsa poked in a cross in the 87th minute to give Torino a 2-1 victory over Atalanta in a Serie A match Sunday.
Torino (31 points) swept the season series with Atalanta (27 points), though this match indicated Atalanta's improvement since absorbing a 5-1 defeat in the first match in Bergamo Sept. 30.
Alessio Cerci broke down the right side on a 42nd-minute counterattack for the first goal. Torino controlled the tempo and nearly added another score as Paulo Barreto hit the bar in the 72nd minute.
A minute later, Atalanta substitute Marko Livaja went down in a clash with goalkeeper Jean Francois Gillet, who was cautioned. German Denis then converted the penalty, his shot deflecting off Gillet in the 74th minute.
Birsa, a Slovenian international who joined Torino on a free transfer from Genoa this season, replaced Alen Stevanovic in the 62nd minute, then scored the deciding goal, finishing a cross from Matteo Darmian.
