Five-time champions Spain have been knocked out of the Davis Cup after losing their tie with Canada 3-2 on Sunday.

Going into the final day, Spain were down 2-1 and their fate was sealed when Milos Raonic beat Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-3 6-4 6-2 in the fourth rubber in Toronto to send Canada into their first Davis Cup quarter-final berth.

Raonic was unstoppable in the match, firing 22 aces and 55 winners past Lopez as an undermanned Spain, missing the likes of Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer , were condemned to their first opening-round exit since 2006.

The USA had Sam Querrey to thank as they progressed past Brazil into the next round after the 25-year-old overcame Thiago Alves 4-6 6-3 6-4 7-6 (7-3) in Florida.

After watching a 2-0 lead slip away thanks to the Bryan brothers ' shock loss in the doubles on Saturday and John Isner's 2-6 6-4 6-7 (7-9) 6-4 6-3 loss to Thomaz Bellucci earlier on Sunday, the result of the tie rested on the outcome of the fifth and final rubber.

With the pressure on, Querrey was able to hold his nerve thanks to some big serving to set up a clash with Serbia , who sealed their progression on Saturday after winning their first three rubbers against Belgium.

The Czech Republic also booked their place in the quarter-finals after Tomas Berdych outlasted Stanislas Wawrinka 6-3 6-4 3-6 7-6 (7-5) in a match that went for over three hours in Geneva .

With both players returning to the court after an epic doubles rubber on Saturday that lasted for seven hours, Berdych was able to best Wawrinka to hand the Czechs an insurmountable 3-1 lead.

The Czechs will now face Kazakhstan who beat Austria 3-1 after Andrey Golubev recovered from a set down to record a pivotal 4-6 6-3 6-4 6-2 victory over Jurgen Melzer .

Fabio Fognini was the hero for Italy after he got the better of Croatia 's Ivan Dodig 4-6 6-4 6-4 6-4 in their final rubber to hand Italy a 3-2 win in Turin and set up a quarter-final clash with Canada.

Argentina and France were able to round out their ties with Germany and Israel 5-0 respectively after both countries enjoyed victories in their final two rubbers.
